Hangzhou & West Lake

Hangzhou’s industries have traditionally been textile, silk and machinery, but electronics and other light industries are developing, especially since the start of the new open economy in 1992. Toshiba has its only overseas production plant for laptop computers here. Wahaha, the nation’s largest beverage company, is headquartered in the city. Alibaba is an e-commerce/e-auction company based in the city. The GDP per capita was Â¥61,313 (US$8.063B), ranked no. 8 among 659 Chinese cities.

Tea is an important part of Hangzhou’s economy and culture. Hangzhou is best known for originating Longjing, a famous variety of green tea. The most famous being Xi Hu Long Jing. Known as the best type of Long Jing tea, Xi Hu Long Jing is grown near Xi Hu in Hangzhou, hence its name.

Hangzhou is also known for its artistic creations, such as silk, umbrellas, and Chinese hand-held folding fans.

West Lake Boat Cruise

Hangzhou West Lake

Our China Trade Mission - the 2008 China Investors Field Trip - take a boat cruise on West Lake to see the magnificent scenery that surrounds this ancient and beautiful area.

West Lake is a famous fresh water lake located in the historic center of Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province of eastern China. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with an area of around 4.04 square miles. The distance from north to south is about 1.99 miles, and east to west, 1.74 miles. The average depth of West Lake is 7.5 feet.

West Lake is not only famous for its picturesque landscape, it is also associated with many scholars, national heroes and revolutionary martyrs, thus embracing many aspects of Chinese culture. In addition, many ancient buildings, stone caves and engraved tablets in surrounding areas are among the most cherished national treasures of China, with significant artistic value.

As the pictures indicate, this is a beautiful area in China. There is a famous Chinese song that talks about the West Lake area. I thought I would share it with you.

“Ripping water shimmering on sunny day,
Misty mountains shrouded the rain;
Plain or gaily decked out like Xizi;
West Lake is always alluring.”
